Design excellence and fiscal responsibility were established as the cornerstone of William / Kaven at the inception of our family business. Our team of architects is experienced on projects of various scales, complexities and types. In addition to outstanding architectural design capabilities, William / Kaven has unique experience in many cases as the driver of the development and entitlement processes. In 2015, Partner Daniel Kaven formed Kaven + Co. to facilitate visionary in-house projects in conjunction with William / Kaven Architecture. Since its inception, Kaven + Co. has originated over $100 million in real estate development, including Block 33, a city block in downtown Portland, Oregon, which is currently being developed in partnership with Guardian Real Estate.

In 2018, the firm publicly proposed a pair of 1000 foot skyscrapers interlinked by a botanical garden 680 feet in the air that would anchor a $3 billion redevelopment of a downtown property owned by the City of Portland. Kaven’s proposal also included a new underground bullet train hub that would interlink Portland to Seattle and Los Angeles. The buildings, which would have been among the tallest in America, gained widespread international acclaim for their innovative design and bold sociological program.

A business-forward approach to architecture and design requires a deep understanding of Portland’s market, allows us to more holistically meet clients’ needs, and positions the firm as a leader of the city’s future urban growth.
